Colorado Floorworks Uses Laticrete
for Air Force Academy Renovation

Laticrete, a global leader in the manufacturing of innovative systems for the installation of tile and stone, provided Colorado Floorworks with a complete range of Laticrete® products for the major renovation of the Cadet Gymnasium locker rooms and adjoining restrooms at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

As part of the $5.1 million renovation that added 20,000 square feet of space to the Cadet Gymnasium, Colorado Floorworks installed 60,000 square feet of tile for the locker room walls, steam rooms, showers and restrooms with Laticrete® materials. Colorado Floorworks spearheaded the change of the original specification that included a number of different products from different suppliers, providing the general contractor Centerre Construction considerable savings with single-source responsibility backed by Laticrete® with a 10-year warranty.

Colorado Floorworks completed the installation with a full range of innovative products from Laticrete® including Laticrete® Hydro Ban™, Laticrete 254 Platinum thin-set and Laticrete SpectraLOCK® PRO Grout^. For the steam rooms, the product of choice was Laticrete 9235 Waterproofing Membrane. All of the Laticrete® materials were supplied through Tim Whitver of the Rio Grande Company, a long-time Laticrete® distributor in the Greater Denver area.

To install over 60,000 square feet of 2" x 2" mosaic tiles in the wet areas of the newly renovated Cadet Gymnasium, Colorado Floorworks utilized the revolutionary Laticrete® Hydro Ban for waterproofing and anti-fracture protection in each area with the exception of the steam room. Laticrete® Hydro Ban is a thin, liquid applied waterproofing and anti-fracture membrane that does not require the use of fabric* in the field, covers or corners. In addition to eliminating the time-consuming task of installing fabric, Laticrete® Hydro Ban bonded directly to the PVC and metal plumbing fixtures* for additional time and labor saving benefits. Laticrete® Hydro Ban can be flood tested in just two hours** at 70°F (21°C) or higher, another product feature that helped speed up productivity for the gymnasium renovation.

The 2" x 2" mosaic tiles were used extensively for this renovation, including the walls and the actual showers in the locker room. The tiles were set with Laticrete® 254 Platinum thin-set, a premium multipurpose adhesive that provides superior bond strength and is suitable over virtually any substrate, interior or exterior. To grout the mosaics in all areas of the Cadet Gymnasium, the specification included Laticrete SpectraLOCK® PRO Grout. With a working time of 80 minutes, Laticrete SpectraLOCK® PRO Grout offers the high performance, color uniformity, durability and stain resistance of an epoxy grout with extraordinary ease of use. Laticrete SpectraLOCK® PRO Grout can be used on floors and walls, and will inhibit the growth of stain-causing mold and mildew in the grout joint with antimicrobial protection from Microban®. The entire range of Laticrete products supplied by the Rio Grande Company for the Air Force Base Cadet Gymnasium renovation is GreenGuard certified to promote healthy indoor air.
