Mapei Donation Helps Global ReLeaf Plant 50,000 Trees

At the National Wood Flooring Association convention in Baltimore, Maryland, in March, MAPEI, a leading global manufacturer of adhesives, sealants and chemical products for the building industry, presented its first check for $50,000 to American Forests.

Margo Dawley, Vice President of American Forests' Global ReLeaf Program accepted the check. During 2010, MAPEI has committed to donate $1 from the sale of each pail of its Ultrabond ECO brand of urethane wood adhesives to the reforestation of damaged and deforested land in the United States and Canada. The company is committed to giving a total of $200,000 to the program by the end of the year.

Ultrabond ECO 995, 990, 980 and 975 are used for the installation of wood flooring in residential and commercial construction projects. "Because of recent technological advances made in this field, we have been able to reformulate our wood adhesives so that they are now phthalate-free and are manufactured with rapidly renewable materials," said Jeff Johnson, Product Line Manager for MAPEI's Floor Covering Installation Systems. "We felt we could best highlight the characteristics of these highly eco-compatible wood installation products by helping renew our natural resources. We think that American Forests' Global ReLeaf program does an excellent job of focusing on geographical areas where re-planting with indigenous trees can make the most favorable impact on the environment. We are happy to share the success of our new adhesives with such a successful environmental program."

MAPEI's commitment to the environment is deep and long-standing. In the Americas, MAPEI has been a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) since 2001 and the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC) since 2008.

In 1980, MAPEI first developed the Ultrabond ECO line of adhesives for carpet and resilient flooring, taking care to develop formulas that are low in VOCs. MAPEI continually strives to manufacture from locally produced raw materials. MAPEI's Low-Dust Technology makes jobsites cleaner for workers and end users.

Select MAPEI products are produced with BioBlockTM technology to help protect them from mold and mildew. MAPEI is set to receive ISO 14001 accreditation in its Laval plant in 2010 and will then seek to have all its facilities in the Americas accredited for environmental management.
